About WattWorks

Why I built this

Planning an e-bike conversion means juggling spec sheets across dozens of product pages, trying to figure out which controller works with which motor, whether the connectors match, and if the battery voltage is right. I got tired of doing that in a spreadsheet, so I built WattWorks.

It's a database of e-bike conversion parts — hub motors, mid-drives, batteries, controllers, displays, connectors, and more. Every component has specs, purchase links from multiple sellers, and price history. The build tool lets you pick parts and automatically checks whether they're compatible.

How compatibility checks work

When you add components to a build, the system runs checks automatically:

  • Voltage matching: battery, controller, and motor voltage ranges overlap
  • Connectors: port connectors match in pin count, type, and gender
  • Physical fitment: dropout width, bottom bracket size, wheel size, axle compatibility
  • Protocols: display communication protocols match between controller and display
  • Current ratings: controller output vs motor rating and battery discharge capacity

Checks are conservative — a warning means something is worth double-checking, not necessarily that parts won't work.

For a detailed breakdown of all 36 checks, see the methodology page.

Pricing data

Prices are updated regularly and sourced from multiple retailers. Every seller I know about is shown for every product, regardless of affiliate relationships. Nothing is ranked or hidden based on commission.

Data sources

Specs come from manufacturer datasheets, product pages, and manual verification. I do my best to keep things accurate, but if you spot something wrong or missing, let me know.

About affiliate links

Some product links on WattWorks are affiliate links. If you buy through them, I get a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps cover hosting and development.

Affiliate links never influence what's shown or how products are ranked. Every seller I know about is listed regardless of whether they have an affiliate program.
